TOEFL is the preferred English test for universities in the United States. In January 2026 ETS rebuilt it, and the version most Indian students are being coached for is out of date.
TOEFL changed on 21 January 2026. The test is now roughly 1 hour 25 minutes, Reading and Listening are adaptive, and scoring moved from 0 to 120 onto a 1 to 6 scale. If a coaching centre is still teaching integrated tasks and a 120-point total, they are teaching the old test. Most material on the Indian market has not caught up.

Total testing time is 1 hour 23 to 1 hour 29 minutes. ETS advises allowing about two hours door to door, which includes check in.
Reading now includes Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage. Listening covers conversations, announcements and academic talks. Writing is ten Build a Sentence items, one email and one academic discussion post. Speaking is seven Listen and Repeat items and a four-part interview. The long integrated speaking and writing tasks that defined the old TOEFL are gone.
Each section and the total are reported from 1 to 6 in half point steps. Every score report also carries a CEFR level and, until January 2028, a comparable estimated score on the old 0 to 120 scale. That dual reporting is a transition measure, not permanent.

CEFR mapping is uniform across all four skills on the new scale, unlike the old test where the B2 threshold varied by section.
If your offer says 100, you need a 5, not a 5.5. ETS has told institutions explicitly that a university which previously required 100 should set its new requirement at band 5, because setting 5.5 would reject applicants who would have scored above 100. Universities are still updating their published requirements, so if an offer letter quotes an old-scale number, ask the admissions office which band they will accept and get it in writing.
For comparison, ETS publishes a concordance putting IELTS 7.0 at roughly a TOEFL total of 5.
Test centre or Home Edition, with a live human proctor. The Home Edition runs 24 hours a day, four days a week, and is the same test as the centre version. The paper edition was discontinued after 20 January 2024. Scores are released within 72 hours and are valid for two years.

ETS offers the Home Edition globally with a live proctor and states it is the same test as the centre version. We could not confirm an India-specific restriction either way, so check the availability page when you register.
ETS does not publish a fixed India or UAE fee on its public pages, and the figure appears only inside the registration flow. We do not quote a number we cannot verify. Check the official ETS registration page for your country before booking.
TOEFL, in most cases. It was designed for North American academic English and is the more familiar credential to US admissions offices.
