Japanese is the ninth most widely spoken language in the world and the gateway to one of the world's largest economies. JLPT N3 โ the intermediate level โ is the benchmark that opens doors to Japanese university programmes, employment in Japan, and professional roles in Japanese companies operating in India and the Middle East. Here is a verified 18-month roadmap.
The JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) is administered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services. It has five levels:
Japanese has three scripts. Hiragana and katakana are phonetic syllabaries โ each has 46 base characters. Both can be learned to reading fluency in 4โ6 weeks with daily practice of 20โ30 minutes.
Do not proceed to grammar until hiragana and katakana are fully internalised โ not just recognised, but read fluently without looking up characters. This foundation determines your speed throughout the rest of the programme.
Simultaneously begin N5 vocabulary (800 words) and core grammar patterns: particles (ใฏ, ใ, ใ, ใซ, ใง), verb conjugations (plain and masu form), basic sentence structure (Subject-Object-Verb), and the copula (ใงใ/ใ ).
N4 grammar introduces conditional forms (ใใใใใใฐใใใจ), potential verbs, causative and passive constructions, and the te-form for linking clauses. These are essential for N3 and must be mastered, not just recognised.
Kanji learning strategy: do not attempt to memorise kanji in isolation. Learn them in vocabulary context. For N4, 300 kanji are required โ approximately 3โ4 new kanji per day is sustainable alongside grammar study.
N3 reading passages are longer and use a mix of formal and informal register. Students who have not read Japanese regularly at N4 level often struggle with reading speed at N3. Build the habit of reading short Japanese articles and NHK Web Easy news from month 10 onwards.
Listening at N3 features natural conversational speed with a variety of speakers. Practise with JLPT N3 past papers (available on the Japan Foundation website) and NHK Easy News audio.
In the final 6 weeks: take one full mock test per week under exam conditions. Review errors systematically โ categorise them as grammar, vocabulary, kanji, or listening strategy errors, and address each category specifically.
